Parenting in a digital Age w/ Dr. Katherine Koonce

It is with great excitement that we are finally able to announce that our church will be hosting a mini-conference on Saturday, November 3rd on the difficult topic of parenting in a digital age. The event will take place at our regular meeting place, Jonathan Edwards Classical Academy—please put this on your calendars! Our speaker will be Dr. Katherine Koonce.

Dr. Koonce has worked for over thirty years in a variety of school and community settings as a child development and learning specialist working with children, teens, and families.  She served as the Director of Learning Services at Christ Presbyterian Academy for ten years, and then as the CPA Academic Dean for six additional years.  She currently serves as the Head of School at The Covenant School.  Dr. Koonce's husband has worked in full-time Christian ministry for over thirty years.  They have two grown children and live in Brentwood, TN.

A social media driven, app-focused world has created more nuanced challenges than ever before for both educating and protecting our children as they interface with technology. Apps that hide themselves from discovery on smart phones, connect with random people in video chat and allow internet filters to be bypassed are just the tip of the iceberg. The fundamental problem, of course, is the heart and mindset of the user. Dr. Koonce takes a non-alarmist, full-orbed and candid approach to addressing these difficult problems and has a great deal of experience helping parents do the same.

Children are welcome to attend, but the program is best-suited for children ages ten and up—Dr. Koonce has advised that the earlier we can start educating our children on the digital minefield, the better. While all content will be presented respectfully, it will also be presented frankly and will not shy away from issues like “sexting,” pornography and/or online predators. The dangers are real; hence the need to be wise and proactive.

No nursery or childcare is being provided for this event, so please line that care up beforehand if you are not planning to bring your children.

The morning will be conducted in two sessions, 9AM-11AM and 11:30AM to 12:30PM between which we will serve snacks and drinks in the cafeteria. Please arrive shortly before 9AM so we can start on time.

Please register your attendance below and select as many seats as you (and your family) anticipate occupying. Please do not register unless you are genuinely committed to attending upon doing so, as space is limited and this event will be advertised more widely than RBC Nashville.

We look forward to seeing you here and learning how to think wisely about formidable parenting challenges in a relentlessly digital age.
